“The
images in my work somehow escape me in the sense that they arise from an
unconscious collaboration between the dark and quiet of night, the array of
colors on my table, and brush in my hand. I am always intrigued when I view my
painting the morning after working late into the night.”
Referred
to as an “alchemist of color,” Marin’s exploration of the relationship between
pigments, rather than the elements of composition, initiates the creation of
new work. By means of oil pastels, Marin fills the canvas with layers of
multihued passage, rendering deep textures and lush backgrounds. As
relationships emerge from the intertwining colors, Marin distills them into
forms that whisper in and out of the background.
Elizabeth
Marin’s pieces are inspired by what she calls “the mysteries of living.” Her
figurative pieces also exist as instinctual abstractions, pushing the
boundaries of imagination. Using
soothing color juxtapositions, Marin’s works instill unusual images with
approachable warmth.
Marin
comes from a multi-disciplined background. She is self-taught as an artist and
received a BA in Anthropology and Archaeology from Appalachian State University
in 1987. She has traveled widely and her paintings are collected
internationally in Asia and Europe. Her work is in the corporate collections of
Duke University Medical Center, Illinois Masonic Hospital, Chicago Women’s
Health Center, Harris Incorporated, and Intersouth
Advisors.
